John Hassell Yeatts

By Susan M. Thigpen © 1983-2012

Issue: September, 1985

John Hassell Yeatts was born in Mayberry, Virginia on February 17, 1916. He grew up on Mayberry Creek and Hurricane Hill. He knew Mayberry as a boy growing up in the 1920’s. Over the course of his life, he has seen Mayberry prosper then almost disappear. The stories he writes about this area depict a marvelous time in a wonderful place. He has written two short story collections, Remembering Old Mayberry and A Lantern To Light Me Home, about this area. These books enable their readers to travel to the simpler time of Old Mayberry. For an evening of quiet relaxation, you may purchase either book at Mayberry Trading Post between mile post 180 and 181 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

If you wish, you may order by mail from The Craft House, Route 1, Meadows of Dan, Virginia 24120. Please enclose $3.50 plus 50 cents postage and handling for each book ordered. Autographed copies are available upon request. John is usually in and out of The Craft House everyday. You’re welcome to drop by anytime and if he’s in, he’ll be happy to autograph your copy in person.

[Update 2012 - John and Virginia Yeatts have both passed away.]
