Editor's Note... The Backroad Tour in The Mountain Laurel's first anniversary issue was very special. It wound its way through Grayson County and the town of Independence, Virginia. We were captivated with the quaint and lovely splendor of the old 1908 courthouse. The fate of the old courthouse at that time was hanging in the air. There was a chance it might be demolished. We published a plea from concerned citizens of Grayson County to save it, in hopes that save it they would.
For all of you who have wondered what became of the old courthouse, we are printing the following article we received just last week. It was sent to The Mountain Laurel and we feel sure that it was meant to be shared with all of you readers.
"An important history making event will take place in the County Seat of Grayson, the Town of Independence, in southwest Virginia on July 4, 1986, at 1:00 P.M. At that time, Dan Baldwin will rededicate the famous 1908 Grayson Courthouse which he purchased in November 1985. The building will be given to the people of Grayson County to be administered by the 1908 Grayson Courthouse Foundation which was recently established to receive the ownership and oversee the restoration and perpetual maintenance of the building.
The 1908 Grayson Courthouse is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Sites as well as being a part of the Historic District of the Town of Independence. One of the most picturesque structures in the state, the building's fate remained in limbo for almost five years until it was purchased through bid by Dan Baldwin, a Grayson County native.
You are invited to participate in this history making event by being our guest at the Rededication Ceremony to be held on the steps of the 1908 Grayson Courthouse, Main Street, Independence, Virginia, at 1:00 P.M. on the Fourth of July. Plan to come early and view the 21st Annual Independence Day Celebration Parade, one of the state's longest and most colorful parades, at 10:00.
We, the 1908 Courthouse Foundation, shall be honored to supply any additional information you may need (regarding travel arrangements, accommodations, etc.).
We trust you, too, feel the importance of preserving our heritage and in making it available to all of our people. Share with us this time as we strive to set an example for other communities and preservationists to follow. Your show of support will be most rewarding to the people of Grayson County.
We shall appreciate your reply at the earliest convenience. Please feel free to bring your family or friends.
Sincerely,
Pat M. Burris
