1/26/98 - I am Laurie Ray and I live in Savannah, Ga. I have been working on my family history for several years. I have a lot of family from your area of Virginia and am trying to locate an article written about the death of my great great grandfather. His name was John Brown BOWMAN he was born in 1885 in Wytheville, Va. He died in 1928 when he was electrocuted while working on the lines. I don't know the exact month just the year and I am trying to locate the paper and or the article it may be in.

Can you help? I would really appreciate it. I'm really stuck on John BOWMAN because there are so many stories about him and I think that this article may help clear a little of it up. The other thing is that I have been told he ran away from home and changed his last name to BOWMAN from CHISLEY. Any way I would greatly appreciate your input and help.

2/12/98 - I'm Jack Kern, born Philip Jackson Kern, Jr. I'm looking for any information on the Albert Jackson Kern family that I can find. The family lived in Clifton Forge, Virginia. I'm a grandson of Albert Kern and it seems like he had been a conductor for the C&O railroad. I was born in Clifton Forge and grew up in Covington. I'm now residing in Alamogordo, New Mexico. 2/16/98 - GENTRY. Requesting aid of any family genealogists who live in Rockingham or Augusta Co. Virginia. I search for any information on the parents or extended family of Albert GENTRY, b. April 4,1870. -- presumably in Virginia. Albert GENTRY is listed on the 1880 Rockingham Co., Virginia census. He was 10 years old and enumerated with the MARTZ family. His elder brothers, John and Newton and his sister Julia appeared on the same census living in the same immediate area as Albert. All listed as servants in the homes of others. His sister later married a man who surname was KARL or CARL and in the early 1900's they lived in Broadway Virginia. They did have children. Because these children suddenly appear in the homes of others in 1880 is it possible the family suffered some disaster that took their parents ? I have searched for 20 years and have as yet been unable to locate the parents.

Can anyone advise me of the names of the newspapers in the area between 1870 and 1880 ? Also, if there is any known way of being able to seach copies or microfisch of these papers myself in an attempt to discover any clue. This is my grandmother's father. She is 93 and very much wants to know what happened to her father's family and where his people are.

3/31/98- Researching Firth Family from Firth of Forth area in Scotland.  Need information on William and Martha Firth, their parents, siblings, children John A., Dr. Samuel S., Elizabeth and Martha. Believe all children of William and Martha born in Dinwiddie County, VA. I have information on their son Richard Moven Firth who died along with several of his children in yellow fever epidemic in 1878 in Memphis & Thomas Brown Firth who m. Lucretia Ann Wilkes in Brunswick Co., VA and moved to Fayette County, TN ca 1832, my great great great grandparents.  Martha is buried in Fayette Co.,TN. Do not know where William is buried. 7/5/98- I am the grandaughter of ABNER THURSTON ROWE, who was the son of Augustas (Agustas)H. Rowe, aka "Gus". Grandaddy was born here, in Kinsale, VA (Westmoreland Co.), but his father died when he was very young. I have found a document about"Soloman ROWE born in 1807 in Giles County, married in 1827 to Juliena DIAMOND and were the parents of twelve children." 7/17/98- I just happened onto your site! The Weddles in the photo are my g-grandfather and g-g-grandfather! I have never seen a picture of them! Andrew Weddle was my g-g-g-grandfather. Samuel his son was my g-g-grandfather. I am the granddaughter of Lelia Clyde (Clydie) Weddle Tate Sutphin. I am so thrilled to have found this photo. 7/29/98- Looking for Virgina Jane Rollings.

I don't know very much. I know she was in Tenn. but where I don't know. 2 sons or more? One was James Thomas Rollings, born 12-17-1878 supposed to be in Tenn. Married Addie Kees in Van Beaun, Ark. Addie Kees from Seracy, Ark. They married 9-2-1904. James has a brother Tom. We think James lived in Murrilla or o county at one time. James drove a team of freight mules between Weber Falls, Ok and through Searcy but to where? I was told they may have been in Ohio? I am told James was 1/2 or better Cherokee. I remember him as a small child. He looked to be full bood. I can't find where his mother Virgina Jane was married or to who.

More Information on Virgina Jane. Her maiden name was Birdwell born sometimes between 1825 to 1835? in Tenn. in 1864 suppose to be widowed. Married a Thomas J Smally. Her first husband was Abner Rollings. Virgina had a land grant in Searcy, Ark. in 1906 for a 160 acres in her name. The Kees and the Smally's were related. James Thomas' had 3 sisters. Their names are Mary J. Rollings, Alley Rollings, Irena Rollings. Mary J. was born in 1840? This was according to the 1906 census. We think Virgina was also married to a Jones. Family members says she was married 9 times? James Thomas, widow married Eunice and had 5 children and lived in the Washington and Blanchard, Okla until James died. I think at different times Virgina Jane would drop the "g" in Rollings, or they left out on the 1906 cenus.

7/30/98- ELIAS EDWARDS m. MARTHA HARRISON in 1873 in Albemarle Co., Va. They had 6 daughters, Ella, Lola, and ? others, plus 1 son, Luther. Martha probably died before 1900. Elias died after 1900 in a coal mine disaster in Eccles, WV. ELIAS'S parents were JOHNATHAN and JANE EDWARDS. MARTHA'S parents were J.M.J. and SARAH HARRISON. 8/3/98 - Searching for a friend's mother that she has lost contact with. Lois Colleen Newman was born/raised near Blue Grass, VA and married a Rexrode. They had a daughter, Sharon. 8/10/98- I am a temporarily mis-placed "NATIVE SON OF VIRGINIA" now living in Ohio, and longing for my homeland. I have only recently begun to trace my family history and will welcome any and all information from anyone who knows of or has any information on any "MINNIX" - MINIX - MINNICKS - MENIX. Most of my family, from what I have learned, was from South West Virginia (Norton, Grundy, Pennington Gap, Big Stone Gap, Counties of Wise, Wythe, Smyth, Lee), and parts of Eastern Kentucky. Any help at all, no matter how small or seemingly trivial will be most welcome. I will gladly share what little information I have. Especially anxious for information about my Great Grandfather James ? Minnix and my Grandfather James Monroe Minnix, both are rumored to have been coal miners. I want to know what was the country of origin, when the first Minnix came to this country, where they first settled, and hundreds of other unanswered questions I have. 8/24/98- What a great find!!! Thanks for the wonderful site. I'm looking for any information on my DICKERSON family of Floyd County, VA. I find them in the census years 1850-1910. The only information I have is as follows, taken from the 1910 census of Floyd County, while searching for my Grandmother, Mattie Jane (Brown) Dickerson Born Feb.1907 Died Jan. 23, 1950. 9/11/98- I need to know where Martha came from. She is like a mystery woman in this family prior to her moving to Mayberry, Va. She was born: 5-4-1870, Died 2-12-1950, married George W. Light who died at a young age in 1916. He left her to raise 9 kids.She was very unhappy and not too friendly from what I have found out. I do know that she came to Mayberry to visit a cousin, when she was in her teens. Then never went home. Never spoke of her ma or dad or any brothers or sisters. 11/6/98- What a great surprise!  I am searching two sets of families from the Botetourt and Roanoke Counties, Virginia.  The first set is SNIDER/DEMPSEY:  John SNIDER married Lucy DEMPSEY (orphaned dau of William and Jane DuBARTIS DEMPSEY ) on Feb 13, 1810 Botetourt County, VA.  The second set is CAMPBELL/GISH or McCOY:  John CAMPBELL b. Dec 3, 1805 and Mary ? b. 11/16/98- Seeking info. on BENJAMIN HUGHES born Sept. 7, 1859 in HamDIN, VIRGINIA (Hampton, VA PA Pennsylvania?) and died in Colfax, IOWA June 7, 1949. Married CATHARINE JONES, of CARDIFF, WALES, Sept. 26, 1884 at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Was a COAL MINER at Beacon, Evans, (Mahaska County, IA) and at Colfax, (Jasper County, IA) Had son WILLIAM HUGHES, who was marshall at Colfax, Ia. Had son JOHN HUGHES, who lived at Abingdon, ILLINOIS, and died at Des Moines, Ia. (Colfax, Ia) Other sons Benjamin, Ralph, Evan, daughters Jeanetta , & Etta.(BARRON) All genealogy sources exhausted, no living children, & can't afford a professional genealogist. Would like to know WHERE in WALES, Hughes family came from, and WHY the family lost contact with only living great-grandaughter. Some relatives might have moved to WASHINGTON or OREGON. 11/23/98- Hi......I'm looking for any info on Elizabeth CLOUD. The only thing that I have is that she was listed as parent in the marriage book of Russell Co., Va. for Martha E. Cloud who married Albert Robinson on 24 Dec 1875. Martha was born in 1859. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm also working on HESS - JOHNSON - ROBINSON - PECK - BALL

12/9/98- Trying to locate any info on Stephen Bowles from around Lynchburg, Va. Mr. Bowles was born after the mid 1800's and died in his twenty's leaving a widow and three children. Mrs. Bowles later married a Mr. Wingfield and they had three children.

12/17/98- KING family Information about a William King born circa. 1790 who had a son named William. I'm fairly sure the William (1790) had a son named William, who in turn had a son named Robert Lee King. Harris family information. Lillie Victoria Harris married William King Sept 22, 1880.
