Mountain Chuckle - First Day Of School

By Susan M. Thigpen © 1991

Issue: November, 1991

My uncle, who passed away many years ago, told this story about his first day of school.

He felt so big going to school that first day and was quite proud of himself. He got to school, sat down in a desk and pulled out a sheet of paper and a pencil. He started studiously making rows and rows of squiggle marks on the paper.

The teacher came in and looked over his shoulder. She picked up the paper and said, "What is this?"

My uncle, still confident replied, "I just write 'em, I don't read 'em."
